Diocese Rejects Move to Suspend Ties With US Church
Oct 5, 2009
During a recent Synod between 23-26th
September, in the Diocese of False Bay, a Motion put forward by Fr Gavin Mitchell, a priest of the Diocese and from
Anglican Mainstream South Africa, was convincingly lost.
The Motion, headed
‘Relationship of this Diocese with the greater Anglican Communion’,
sought to suspend all ties with the Episcopal Church until there was clarity
about statements about basic faith delivered by Presiding Bishop Schori;
recognize the Anglican Church of North America as an Anglican Church in line
with many of our African brothers and sisters; respectfully requests our bishop
to convey assurances of prayers to Bishop Schori and Archbishop Robert Duncan.
The Diocese of False Bay is
presently linked to Washington Diocese through a Provincial link, has a warm
and lively relationship with St Paul’s Ohio; The Gamaliel Foundation in Chicago,
a link with St James in New York, York Diocese
in England
and Episcopal Relief through Hope Africa and through it’s AIDS work with
Pepfar/American Aid.
The debate was good and centred around the various
statements of our bishops to continue the process of dialogue and listening and
to maintain the unity of our Communion in spite of our diversity of opinion,
true to our own experience as Church in our recent political history of
enabling understanding through talking
