Diocese Rejects Move to Suspend Ties With US Church

During a recent Synod between 23-26th September, in the Diocese of False Bay, a Motion put forward by Fr Gavin Mitchell, a priest of the Diocese and from Anglican Mainstream South Africa, was convincingly lost. 

 

The Motion, headed ‘Relationship of this Diocese with the greater Anglican Communion’, sought to suspend all ties with the Episcopal Church until there was clarity about statements about basic faith delivered by Presiding Bishop Schori; recognize the Anglican Church of North America as an Anglican Church in line with many of our African brothers and sisters; respectfully requests our bishop to convey assurances of prayers to Bishop Schori and Archbishop Robert Duncan.

 

The Diocese of False Bay is presently linked to Washington Diocese through a Provincial link, has a warm and lively relationship with St Paul’s Ohio; The Gamaliel Foundation in Chicago, a link with St James in New York, York Diocese in England and Episcopal Relief through Hope Africa and through it’s AIDS work with Pepfar/American Aid.

 

The debate was good and centred around the various statements of our bishops to continue the process of dialogue and listening and to maintain the unity of our Communion in spite of our diversity of opinion, true to our own experience as Church in our recent political history of enabling understanding through talking
